One of the most popular and widely played casino games across the world is blackjack. The charm of the game lies in the fact that along with chance or luck, a game of blackjack also involves an amount of skill. Also known as Twenty One or Pontoon, this casino game derives from the game Vingt-et-un played in French casinos in the 1700. The game did not strike a chord with American gamblers initially, but once casinos started to hand out bonus payouts to the players on winning, 21 started being popular. One such strategy used was a 10-to-1 payout where the player must have the ace of spades and a black Jack, be it Jack of clubs or spades, to emerge as the winner. This gave the name ‘blackjack’ and it stuck even though the promotional bonus payout was discontinued and according to the modern rules of the game a player with a blackjack in his hand may not have a jack or any black cards at all.

However, the basic rule in blackjack is the points assigned to the cards. Card 2 to 10 have points in face value, the jack, king and queen cards have value 10 while ace has value 11 or 1 depending on the total point value in a player’s hand that should be 21 or less. In course of the game a player has such options as to make a hit, stand, double down, split or surrender and each decision has a corresponding hand signal. Casinos insist on signals so that disputes can be settled through video footage.
